portrait project: charters towers ... exhibition

This photographic project has been nearly 2 years in the making: from concept to funding application to portrait sessions to framed photographic prints in the gallery.

The next stage will be a photographic book – but that’s a story for 2012.

In the meantime, 30+ portraits of a broad range of Charters Towers personalities will be exhibited from the 1 to 16 October 2011 at the Don Roderick Gallery, Mosman St, Charters Towers (in the historically significant Stock Exchange Arcade).

If you are looking for a reason for a day trip to Charters Towers, this could be a good excuse (PS the coffee shop in the Stock Exchange Arcade is a lovely place to refresh after the journey from the coast)

About the artist: originally from Cairns, Karen Tenni discovered photography nearly 20 years ago when a friend loaned his Olympus OM1 SLR. From then, the addiction never waned. Karen moved to Melbourne for work, but when the opportunity arose to relocate to Adelaide and undertake University studies in photography, the family packed up the house (plus cat and goldfish) to experience South Australia. After seven years in Adelaide, it was time to experience regional Australia, and a move back to Queensland. Karen is still pursuing her passion for photography with at least one new project every year (work permitting). With the support of RADF, the Portrait Project has enabled Karen to meet, chat and photograph some of the most interesting and proactive residents of Charters Towers.

Hope to see you there...

The Don Roderick Gallery is an important part of the famous Stock Exchange Arcade in Mosman St (owned by the National Trust of Qld) for locals and visitors who arrive here every year to take in the sights and sounds of a bustling yet historic city. Our aim is to enhance Charters Towers cultural reputation by showcasing the region’s artistic talent.

Last year during the inaugural 2010 Art Competition, there were over 70 artworks exhibited from entries submitted to the selection committee, and the quality art attracted many to the opening celebration and prize presentation. Val Claussen with her painting ‘August Dry’ won the major $4000 prize, and many other artworks were purchased by countless visitors to the exhibition over the 3 week exhibition period.
